How to Choose a Baby Carrier That Actually Fits

Hip position, lumbar support and carry positions explained - so you buy the right one the first time.

How to Choose a Baby Carrier That Actually Fits

A good carrier should feel like it's holding baby's weight for you, not adding to yours. The two things worth checking before you buy: does it support the ergonomic 'M-position' for baby's hips and knees, and does it have a structured lumbar belt that shifts weight to your hips instead of your shoulders?

If you plan to use it for years, look for one that adjusts across three carry positions - front-facing-in for newborns, hip carry for curious six-month-olds, and back carry for a heavier toddler.

Try it on for at least ten minutes in the store or at home before deciding - weight that feels fine for two minutes can feel very different after a real walk. Once you're out the door, small add-ons make a real difference too: a clip-on fan for warm days, and a stroller organizer to keep bottles and keys within reach.

A newborn video monitor is worth having ready at home for the naps in between outings, so you can step away with peace of mind.
