The Fourth Trimester: What Nobody Tells You
The first 12 weeks after birth are their own season. Here's how to actually prepare for it.

Everyone prepares for birth. Almost nobody prepares for the twelve weeks after - the so-called 'fourth trimester' - when your body is healing, your hormones are recalibrating, and you're learning an entirely new person's cues on almost no sleep.
A few things help more than people expect: having recovery basics ready before birth instead of ordering them in a haze afterward, accepting help with food and chores without guilt, and giving yourself permission to rest flat on your back guilt-free.
Pack a simple recovery kit ahead of time: a peri bottle for gentle cleansing, cooling pad liners for the first few days, an adjustable belly binder for extra support as you move around, and a soothing nipple balm if you plan to nurse. Small things, but they save a lot of 3am frustration.
Emotionally, it's normal to feel a wide range of things in the same hour. If low mood or anxiety feels persistent or overwhelming, please reach out to your care provider - postpartum depression and anxiety are common and very treatable.
